Fallen Soldier: Jonathan Dunbar

Master Sergeant Jonathan Dunbar, 36, of Austin, Tex., was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, N.C. He died March 30, 2018, while on a classified mission in Manbij, Syria, when an IED detonated near his patrol.

MSG Dunbar attended Connally High School, graduating in 1999. He entered the Army as an infantryman in May 2005 and graduated from Ranger School in 2008. He was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

MSG Dunbar became a Special Operations team member in 2013 and was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, where the missions got a lot more complicated and dangerous. He served as a team member and deployed three times in support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

MSG Dunbar’s lifelong friend summed him up. "This man was a father, a friend, a brother, a child," Brian Powell said. "He was an amazing individual, and, you know, he sacrificed everything for us."

MSG Dunbar was survived by his wife and three children.
